What
We Do
The Children's Department serves children from preschool
through preteen in a warm and
welcoming environment. Through our multimedia
collection of books, videos, audio cassettes and
magazines children will have the opportunity
to grow, change and explore the world around them.
As preschoolers they might enjoy one of our many puzzles
or curl up with a good book and a cuddly
stuffed animal. For the older child we have a collection
of nearly twenty educational and recreational
CD-ROM's. We offer a full range of programs and events designed to encourage
a love of books, reading and
libraries. Library cards are given to children as soon as they can write their
own names. This allows
even the very young child to feel a sense of belonging and empowerment. The
Children's Department is
for children to use, to enjoy and to approach with pleasure and pride.
Who
We Are
A staff of three full time and two part time librarians
are responsible for providing the services and
maintaining the collections of the Children's Department. Someone is always
available in the room to
assist with locating materials, answering questions or providing instruction
for our online catalog.
Arlene Sprague is the head of the Children's Department and she may be contacted
in person
or by phone to answer your questions or listen to your suggestions. All Children's
Department staff
are there to serve children and their families in a friendly and professional
atmosphere.
Programs
Programs take place all year long.
In the fall and winter there are storytimes for ages 2-8.
These programs introduce children to the joys of books and literature. In
the spring and summer
we offer a craft storytime for the same age group: ages 2-8. Craft storytimes
combine a story with
a craft that emphasizes a theme from the book. Summertime is an extremely
busy time in the
Children's Department. It is when we offer everything from book discussions
and writer's workshops
to pajama storytimes and lunch with the librarian. To see our current program
offerings just

Services
for Teachers
Maintaining a close working relationship
with the schools and teachers of our community is a very
important aspect of children's services in our library. We host class visits,
provide walking tours
of Morristown and work directly
with teachers to ensure curriculum coordination.
Class visits are usually for early elementary grades and they introduce children
to the library and
provide each student with a library card. The walking tours are for middle
elementary grades
and they are conducted when Morristown is studied in the classroom. The buildings
around the library
are featured and their historical significance is discussed. We are also very
happy to consult with
teachers when they are planning assignments that will require the use of library
materials. This
advance preparation will help ensure that the materials necessary for homework
and research
assignments will be readily available. Please call Arlene Sprague, Head of
the Children's Department,
to discuss your curriculum needs. (973) 538-6161
